ACMS Foundation

In 1964, the physicians of the Arlington County Medical Society formed the “Foundation.” The ACMSF was formed to provide access to community medical services to citizens of the community who could not afford medical services or insurance. At the time, our organization provided polio vaccines and health education to our community and, eventually, further expanded support to breast and colon cancer screenings.

In 1997, the Sharon McGowan Breast Health Fund was initiated under the umbrella of the ACMSF to support underserved populations in Northern Virginia with free breast health screenings (mammograms, sonograms and biopsies). The SMBHF raised funds for services provided by Virginia Hospital Center for clients channeled through the Arlington Free Clinic and the Arlington Department of Human Services. The SMBHF will transition into a managed fund under the steward of the AFC.

Arlington County Medical Society Foundation supports local and state charities revolving around medicine and healthcare in our communities. We are proud to present the ACMS Foundation Scholarship, initiated by our physician members, as a means to give back to the future of medicine – to our healthcare students.

The foundation awards a scholarship to a local high school graduate interested in pursuing higher education studies in medicine or healthcare based on merit and financial need. We are currently working with Wakefield High School, which serves some of the most culturally diverse areas in the nation and has a large underserved population. Our physicians volunteer to participate in career days, mentoring and shadowing as we continue to support our local students in their pursuit of a career in the healthcare sector, where the challenges, financial burdens and professional requirements are at the highest levels and where physician shortage continues to threaten the future of healthcare. After experiencing the effects of a global pandemic, the stakes couldn’t be higher – it is now more important than ever to support our future healthcare professionals. The future of our healthcare depends on it.

Please consider donating to this worthy cause and help us raise funds for this valuable scholarship as a gift that gives back to our communities and pays it forward – towards the future of healthcare!

Our small nonprofit organization works hard to raise funds throughout the year (Golf and Tennis event, Charity Poker event, silent auctions, etc.); however, it takes a village to reach each scholarship goal and we could use your help!

Why Give?

Physician shortage is real and we need physicians from all walks of life – the same goes for healthcare workers. As the pathway to become a healthcare professional is long and difficult both academically and financially, ACMSF scholarships provide young graduates much needed financial support throughout the critical undergraduate years. Currently, we work with Wakefield HS (serving the district with the most diverse, socio-economically challenged students in our county), to encourage those who may otherwise not consider medicine/healthcare as a possible career.

With your help, we hope to expand this program so that more students in our area may benefit from the ACMSF support as they go into one of the most challenging academic/training fields!

Make a Difference

In addition to the ACMSF scholarship, our society strives to work with local schools to encourage seniors to study medicine or healthcare in their future professional pathways. We are happy to coordinate career days with local high schools, as well as shadowing/mentoring with individual doctors or practices. These build real, invaluable connections; many of our own member physicians have also grown up in the area, have returned to live and work in Arlington/DC metro-area and are making a difference in our communities every day!
