Notifying the School of Illness

If your child is sick, call school first thing in the morning and tell the school secretary or attendance clerk the child's name and why he/she won't be in school. Some schools have a special attendance hotline; it should be listed in the information packet sent home on the first day of school.

Required Immunizations/Health Forms

Call the Arlington County School Health Program at (703) 228-5020 or your school for detailed information and forms. Your child must have a tuberculin skin test and the written result of the test must be submitted to the school. Also, by law, your child must have certain immunizations and show proof of these immunizations on a Virginia state form. Required immunizations are:

  • Diphtheria, Pertussis and Tetanus (DPT)
  • Polio
  • Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)

School Nurses

Each school has a clinic, operated by the School Health Bureau of the Arlington County Department of Human Services. A nurse or nurse's aide is assigned to your child's school every day. Clinic staff deal with minor injuries and distribute medications to students who are under the care of a physician. Clinic staff cannot distribute medication to your child unless you sign a form giving permission and provide a copy of the doctor's prescription. Call your school for more information about this service.

Food Services

Every Arlington school serves lunch to students. Most schools also offer breakfast programs and summer nutrition programs. Prices vary, and many low-income students qualify for free or reduced-price meals. For more information, call the Food Services Office at (703) 228-6130.
