Arlington County Medical Society Foundation

Established in 1965, the physicians of the Arlington County Medical Society started the Foundation with a surplus of funds from their program to eradicate polio in Arlington County. The physicians of the Society under the direction of Dr. Joseph Romness, then president of the Society, planned and administered the polio immunization program in Arlington. They gave one of the first applications, which was given in the form of a sugar cube containing oral poliomyelitis vaccine formulated with attenuated live viruses. This was developed by a local Washington physician, Albert Sabin, M.D. The sugar cube replaced the initial injectable vaccine developed by Jonas Salk, M.D. The Society's program impacted the community in such a way that many immunized recipients provided contributions. There was such an outpouring of support that it generated a surplus. Thus, the Foundation was started by the physicians of the Society to continue to help the community of Arlington to live better, healthier lives through access to health care and education.

The Sharon McGowan Breast Health Fund

In April 1995, breast cancer claimed the life of Sharon S. McGowan of Arlington, beloved wife, mother of seven children, cherished sister, colleague, and friend. She was 44. In her honor, the Sharon McGowan Breast Health Fund was established in 1997 by the Foundation and Gerald S. McGowan on behalf of the women of Arlington facing the same struggle with breast cancer, but with little resources. The fund enables the under-served women of Arlington County to attain diagnosis and evaluation of breast disease that has been determined by either abnormal mammography or a palpable breast lump.
